Thoughtfully designed by the artist to raise awareness for the numerous species at risk across the world's largest freshwater archipelago; Georgian Bay.

Monarch Butterflies are often called the milkweed butterfly, with larva feeding exclusively on this plant. Migrating thousands of kilometres to over winter in one of twelve sites in Mexico, Monarch's begin their migration to the Gulf Coast of the United States in March and early April. The females will lay eggs and it is these offspring that continue the journey north to reproduce in Ontario arriving usually in early June.

With the winter population concentrated in only 12 sites in Mexico, Monarch's are vulnerable to natural disasters such as winter storms and changes to the forest by activities such as logging. The application of herbicide has also eliminated milkweed in some agricultural areas.
